Local Hero and his family will be honored again under Friday Night Lights in Frankfort

This year marks the 10-year anniversary of losing Lincoln-Way East High School alum Army PFC Aaron Toppen while deployed in Afghanistan. On June 9, 2014, while on assignment in Zabul province Toppen was on a mission to secure an area for the upcoming presidential election when his unit encountered Taliban resistance. PFC Toppen, along with four other Americans and an Afghan interpreter, lost their lives in a tragic friendly fire incident.

PFC Toppen grew up in Mokena, IL, attended Mokena district 159 schools and graduated from Lincoln-Way East High School in 2013.

PFC Toppen is a highly-decorated veteran who gave his life protecting the United States of America—it’s important for everyone to know his long list of recognition and awards:

  • National Defense Service Medal

  • Bronze Star and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal

  • Army Service Ribbon and the NATO Medal

  • Purple Heart Medal

  • Army Commendation Medal
