GRADES AND CREDITS

Lincoln-Way course grades are calculated by work completed in one semester (80% of final grade) and student performance of the final examination for the course (20%). The resulting percentage corresponds with the below listed course grade and earned points.

Report Cards, Grade Point Average (GPA)

Report cards are processed electronically and posted to student and family accounts in Skyward. There are two reporting periods: End of First Semester and End of Second Semester. Report cards contain the total number of days absent, the grades earned in each course, the number of credits earned in each course, and the number of points earned each course.

Grade point average (GPA) is calculated by adding the number of earned points for each course in a semester together and diving by the number of attempted credits that semester. GPA at Lincoln-Way is extended to the 3rd decimal.

There are three reported variations of student GPA:

  • Semester GPA – GPA for the current/most recent grading period, with earned unweighted point values dived by the number of attempted credits in that semester. This is the GPA that is used to determine honor roll status.

  • Unweighted Cumulative GPA – GPA for all completed semesters of high school with earned unweighted point values dived by the number of attempted credits in all previous semesters.

  • Weighted Cumulative GPA - GPA for all completed semesters of high school with (if applicable) earned weighted point values dived by the number of attempted credits in all previous semesters.

 Weighted Courses

Weighted courses are calculated in cumulative GPA. Generally, weighted courses are Honors, Advanced Placement (AP), or capstone courses. Students who are not automatically enrolled or recommended by a current LW instructor to be in a weighted course may enter with a parent/student waiver.

To benefit from the weighted grades, a student must earn a grade of C- or higher in a designated course.

 Academic Honors

Academic Honor Roll is achieved by full time students based on unweighted semester GPA.

  • All students who earn 3.5 or above are granted high honors.

  • Students who earn a grade point average of 3.0 or above and below 3.5 are granted honors.

Weighting does not affect semester GPA. The weight is applied to cumulative GPA. The weight does not affect work from one specific grade period, but of all cumulative grade periods. All grades will be evaluated in proportion to the amount of credit given for the course.

Graduation Honors - at the conclusion of a student’s 7th semester, the transcript will be evaluated for academic honor consideration based upon the following criteria:

  • Summa Cum Laude:  Weighted GPA of 4.5 and above

  • Magna Cum Laude: Weighted GPA of 4.2-4.499

  • Cum Laude: Weighted GPA of 4.0 – 4.199; Unweighted GPA of 3.5 and above

Transcripts will not be re-evaluated after the 8th semester. Honors designation will be printed on student transcripts after the 7th semester if they meet the criteria. Final transcripts will also recognize these academic honors.
