Speech Team

Description:
Our season starts with practice in September and October. Competition begins in November and runs through February. There are meetings twice monthly for the whole team, while individuals meet with their respective coaches to rehearse their events at least once every week.

We compete with schools from the entire state at both varsity and novice levels in the following events: Dramatic Duet Acting, Dramatic Interpretation, Extemporaneous Speaking, Humorous Duet Acting, Humorous Interpretation, Impromptu Speaking, Oratorical Declamation, Original Comedy, Original Oratory, Performance in the Round, Prose Reading, Radio Speaking, Special Occasion Speaking, and Verse Reading.

Our purpose is to increase students' confidence and creativity in speaking to the public and performing in front of audiences. Personal, oral communication will never be replaced by computers!

VFW - Voice of Democracy Contest
The VFW National Voice of Democracy Scholarship Contest, an audio essay competition, is available to tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students attending Lincoln-Way High School. To enter the competition, students write and record a three to five minute essay covering the year's assigned patriotic theme.

There are numerous opportunities to win scholarships. Bonds, scholarships and citations are given at all levels of competition. In addition, the local VFW offers monetary awards and certificates of achievement to the top three Lincoln-Way High School finalists.

The American Legion High School Oratorical Contest
The American Legion High School Oratorical Contest is available to ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students attending Lincoln-Way High School. The contest consists of a prepared eight to ten minute oration on some phase of the constitution which emphasizes the duties and obligations of a citizen to the government and a three to five minute extemporaneous speech on an article or amendment selected by the National Americanism Commission.

Besides providing excellent experience for high school students participating in the contest improving their abilities to think and speak clearly and intelligently and developing a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States a number of scholarships awards and citations are granted at the local, state, and national levels.
