ACTIVITIES
Activity Name:
Peer Helpers
Description:
The Peer Helper Program recognizes that adolescents often turn to their peers for advice. With this in mind, the program selects and trains teens to provide assistance to their peers.
Through a survey given to freshman students at the end of the first quarter grading period, the Peer Helper Program identifies students who have demonstrated a natural helping ability.
Throughout training, the peer helpers are introduced to basic helping skills in communication, decision making, active listening and awareness of resources. The peer helpers are not professionals and are trained to know their limits and to seek adult professional guidance when appropriate.
Peer Helpers are friendly, supportive, and responsible young people who are committed to confidentially assisting their peers in personal growth, decision making, and the use of professional resources when needed.
