L-W Central Mathletes win Regional Contest Tuesday, February 26, 2013
The Lincoln-Way Central Mathletes won their regional site for the third year in a row to add to their long tradition of excellence earned over the years.
The Knights took first place in 6 out of 10 areas of competition with a total score of 553. In second place was Lincoln-Way East High School with 447 points and Lockport was third with 436 points.
Team members who earned 1st place individual awards were: Pat Burke and John Christel in Geometry and Michelle Dundek in Algebra 2. In addition, Jana Mudrock and Michael Dybala took home first in the oral competition on Elementary Vector Geometry.
Additional first place finishes were captured by: the Geometry team of Pat Burke, John Christel, Maddie McLaughlin, Marc Veihl, Allison White and Dan Zolecki; the Algebra 2 team of Michelle Dundek, Tony Kestel, Lisa Meister, Jana Mudrock, Joe Onesto, and Lars Torkelson; the Freshman/Sophomore 2-person team of Kevin Triner and Allison White; The Junior/Senior 8-person team of Danijela Jackovich, Billy Munch, Andy Munch, Andrew VanderSchaaf, Michelle Dundek, Beth Senese, Breanna Weiss, and Vinnie DeBono; and the Calculator team of Alex Blachowicz, Nick Fazzini, Lisa Meister, John Christel and Derek Jones.
Mathlete President, Mike Dybala, spoke to his team after the competition. He congratulated the members who earned individual awards and stated, "Three-peat, impressive. Let's keep our eyes on the prize, we're going to state."
The Mathlete team has qualified for the state competition on May 4th at University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.
Head coach and mathematics teacher Lisa Parker stated, "These students represented Lincoln-Way Central admirably at the regional competition. I am impressed with their support of one another, their excellent sportsmanship, and their hard work."
