Griffin heartbeat continues at LW East

The heartbeat of the Griffin goes on at Lincoln-Way East High School.

On Tuesday, Aug. 19, about 2,800 students returned to Lincoln-Way East High School for the start of the 2008-09 school year. They were greeted by Principal Brenda Jensen and her team of teachers, administrators and staff.

During second hour, Jensen explained over the school’s PA system how the Griffin was born under the leadership of former Principal Michael Gardner when East became a grade 9-12 school in 2001. Even though Gardner went on to become principal at Lincoln-Way North High School this year, the Griffin’s heartbeat goes on as strong as ever, she added.

On cue, members of the Marching Griffins drum line began playing a steady cadence – representing the Griffin’s heartbeat – and led students outside for an all-school assembly and parade.

“The Beat Goes On,” was the theme of the day as students gathered to sing the National Anthem and hear a few opening day remarks from Jensen.
Students were then treated to a parade, which included members of varsity baseball team (the IHSBCA summer state champions) riding atop fire trucks, members of Lincoln-Way’s winning gymnastics team (the 2008 state championship runner-ups) riding in a convertible and the award-winning Marching Griffins.

Also featured in the parade were the school’s cheerleading and poms squads, which performed separate routines, and class officers for the senior, junior and sophomore classes.

Yugo the Griffin also made an appearance, getting students fired up for the 2008-09 school year.
