On Saturday, June 10, 2017 at EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Illinois, the Lincoln-Way East Girls Softball Team took second in the IHSA State Competition. The Griffins had advanced to the 4A title game on June 9 when they secured the semifinal victory over Marist High School.

The players put up at tough fight against Oak Park-River Forest, only allowing their opponents to score once. Ultimately, the one run would lift the Huskies to victory, but the Griffins remain incredibly proud of their high-achieving season.

“The coaching staff couldn’t be prouder of the girls and what they accomplished,” said Head Coach Elizabeth Pawlicki. “Throughout the post season, we played excellent defense; offensively, our bats were sound. The girls became a family and bonded and because of that we were able to accomplish so much. This team will forever hold a special place in my heart; the memories we made will stay with us forever.”

The following morning, a parade was held in celebration of the season. Approximately 15 vehicles departed from Lincoln-Way East to travel to Lincoln-Way North, visiting different areas of the community before ultimately returning to East. Following the parade, a trophy presentation was held in the main gymnasium.

"This was an exciting season capped off with a great weekend at state,” said Lincoln-Way East Athletic Director Mark Vander Kooi. “Every pitch in the semifinal game and state championship game brought high energy from the crowd. When the season began, I do not think many could anticipate how much this team would end up bonding, or anticipate that we would be making our third trip to state in the last four years. We are very proud of them, Coach Pawlicki, and the coaching staff. They battled to the very end and left everything on the field.”
