Lincoln-Way Students to perform in Rising Star Showcase
Monday, March 13, 2017

On Sunday, March 19, 2017, at 4:30 p.m., the Friends of the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra will host the annual Rising Star Showcase at Flossmoor Community Church, 2218 Hutchison Road, Flossmoor, Illinois.

The organization was recognized as the 2016 Guild of the Year by the Illinois Council of Orchestras, due in part to their innovative projects like the Rising Star Showcase.

"As usual, the kids are phenomenal," said IPO board member and Friends President Dory Machtinger. "You will not believe your ears, and you will think to yourself, 'Wow, how can someone so young do this so well?'"

The Friends have organized this annual concert because they want to offer Chicago Southland youth musicians the opportunity to showcase their talents and share them with a wider audience. School concerts and private lesson recitals are one thing, but performing for a paying audience adds a level of professionalism that will hopefully continue to encourage and inspire these teen artists, the Friends believe.

Throughout the year, members of the Friends employ grass roots efforts to publicize the Showcase and find students who might be performance ready and encourage them to apply. The students must submit an audition recording and an application with teacher recommendations, all of which is rigorously reviewed by the Rising Star committee.

The youth musicians selected to perform in the 2017 concert include:

• David Alexander, Lincoln-Way East High School
• Ellen Galentas, Lyons Township High School
• Christian Guillermo, Marquette Manor Baptist Academy
• Maxwell Moore, Merrillville High School
• Katharine Nelson, Parker Junior High School
• Jared Peters, Home Schooled
• Sebastian Tous, Lincoln-Way West High School
• Althena Yu, Prairie View Middle School

Concert tickets are $10 for adults. All students, regardless of age, will reciee free admission.

Proceeds from the concert benefit the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra. This year's Rising Star Showcase is co-sponsored by Prairie State College.

Those who are interested may purchase tickets by calling the IPO office at 708.481.7774 Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. A limited number of tickets will be for sale at the door for cash or check only.
