Students in Lincoln-Way Norths Child Development Class received a special visit last week from Rush University Hospital NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) Nurse Nicole Brown.

Students in Mrs. Beth Russlers Child Development class heard first-hand about health issues that can occur with premature babies, and NICU procedures in the delivery room.

September is Neonatal Intensive Care Awareness (NICA) Month so I wanted students to get a real-world perspective from a neonatal health professional, said Russler. Students were very engaged in the discussion, asking questions about the neonatal health industry and what is required to become a nurse.

Mrs. Russler also shared photos and stories from her own personal experience with her twins Lucy and JJ, who made a special guest appearance to the class.

It was a valuable and touching lesson to share my personal experience with the students and relate it to what we are learning about childcare health and development, Russler said.
