Lincoln-Way West Librarian Launches Read and Tweet
Tuesday, September 8, 2015

Lincoln-Way West is launching Read and Tweet, a program that will use social media to engage students in reading and online discussions. The idea was developed by Wests Librarian Jennifer Bromann-Bender and Library Assistant Kamme Oler.

Our goal is to encourage and increase student reading in a way that relates to students through Twitter, said Bromann-Bender. My hope is that students will find a book they love and share it with their classmates to create more interest in books.

Students will be encouraged to form a group of up to six and choose a book to read together. Each group will develop a hashtag that incorporates their team number and all or part of the book they are reading.

Students who tweet about their book will receive points. One point will be given for each team tweet, retweet or favorites. The program will include weekly challenges to earn bonus points.

Library staff will total weekly points and the winning Twitter team will receive a pizza party at the end of the semester.

Students love to find new topics to tweet about and I hope to use their Twitter excitement to generate greater interest in reading and improve their reading skills throughout the year, Bromann-Bender said.
