L-W Central Mathletes win 8th conference title

On Wednesday, January 28th, the Lincoln-Way Central Mathletes won their conference finals meet for the eighth year in a row.

The Knights took home 635 points against Lincoln-Way Wests strong showing of 619 points. Sandburg placed third with a total score of 603.

In the 15 areas of competition, the Knights earned 2 fourth place medals, 2 third place medals, 7 second place medals, and 3 first place medals, stated Lisa Parker, Mathlete head coach and mathematics teacher for Central.

Juniors Matt Fleckenstein and Derek Jones earned sixth place in their oral on Functions & Graphs with 44 points. Seniors Priya Patel and Allison White placed 4th by scoring 40 points in their Logic Oral. Sophomores Michael Gentry and Sawyer Hobbs stole the show in the Matrices Oral where they earned 48 points.

Other Knights placing first were the Senior Trig Word Problems team of Pat Burke, John Christel, Vinnie DeBono, Brandon Ross, Marc Veihl, and Allison White and the junior/senior Calculator team of John Christel, Priya Patel, Marc Veihl, Michael Gentry, Ronnie Pacheco, and Justin Silberman.

Lincoln-Way Central Mathlete President Priya Patel stated, I am so proud of my team, my family, for working incredibly hard to pull off this eighth consecutive conference win. It could not have been possible without our coaches who have supported and motivated us. Our team has stayed focused all year to lead us to this huge accomplishment.
Coach Parker added, It is my privilege to work with this team every year and watch them progress with their mathematics. They work hard every week to do the practice as well as keep up with their daily school work.

The Knights will set their sights on a victory at the Regional competition in late February.
