Lincoln-Way Central “Road to Reality”Wednesday, September 18, 2019
Lincoln-Way Central hosted the “Road to Reality” on September 17 to remind students it is never ok to drink and drive. The Knights put on this powerful program every year during Homecoming week, showing the impact of drunk driving through a series of live scenes by student and community actors, local police and fire officials, emergency room staff, the Will County coroner’s office, and a judge.
The event is targeted to new drivers and their parents, although it is a grave reminder for all drivers how one mistake can ruin your life. Attendees are led throughout the building and watch as scenes unfold. The emotional performance begins with teens at a party where alcohol is being served, who make the decision to drive to pick up a friend. The audience is led outside to an authentic car crash scene where the fire department uses the jaws of life to extract a passenger. Later, they enter the “emergency room” where the driver was injured and a second student is treated by Silver Cross staff and is pronounced dead.
The teen driver, who had been drinking, was arrested and sentenced to 14 years in jail for killing her friend. The compelling performance ends with a body bag in the “coroner’s office.”
Local community organizations and agencies were available before and after the performance to provide resources to families and many students signed a promise to never drink and drive.
Special thank you to all our community partners for their support and assistance with this important event.
