Wednesday, January 21, 2015

Lincoln-Way East Coach Wendy Hegarty has been named Coach of the Year in Class 3A Girls Track & Field by the Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Association (ITCCCA).

Coach Hegarty was presented her award and honored at a reception by the ITCCCA on January 9, 2015 in Downers Grove, IL.

She has worked for Lincoln-Way High School District 210 since 1995 as an economics and social science teacher and coach.

This AAA Girls Track award means a lot because it was voted on by the Illinois Track Coaches themselves. Its always nice to be recognized by your peers, stated Hegarty.

Hegarty has a long history of coaching track at Lincoln-Way. She was hired in 1993 as a long jump coach. She coached for the Lincoln-Way Knights for 9 years then the first spring at Lincoln-Way East in 2002 she coached the long jump.

In 2005 she was the Lincoln-Way East Head Track Coach for boys and girls. The programs split and she was head coach in 2006 for the girls team.

I then handed it off to Caroline Gerritsen in 2007, and she gave it back in 2014, said Hegarty with a smile.

In addition, she has been with the Cross Country program since L-W East High School started in 2001. She was an assistant for Amy Jacobucci for 4 years, then became Head Cross Country Coach for the last 10 years.

When asked what has been the highlight of her coaching career she stated, The back to back Track State Championships have been an amazing way to cap my track career. As an assistant and then head coach, watching the East Girls Track Team dominate in Charleston on that Saturday was spectacular. The East Girls Cross Country Team earned a second place state medal in 2004. As a relatively new school and not expected to earn a trophy, it was the greatest cross country race Ive ever seen! It was a special group of girls setting the bar high for East.

We are very proud of any coaching honors received by our fine coaching staff. We are happy for Wendy and this accomplishment. She has a passion about running and it clearly shows in her coaching, said Mark Vander Kooi, East Athletic Director.

Hegarty earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in history and teaching certificate from Lewis University. She also earned her masters degree in history from Illinois State University.

In 2003 she began giving out a scholarship in her fathers name to a senior in the first graduating class at Lincoln-Way East High School. This will be the 13th year of the scholarship she has sponsored. Her father was an Irish National Bicycling Champion.
