Lincoln-Way alumni and Chicago Blackhawks alumni team up for a cause
Thursday, May 24, 2018

On Friday, June 1 and Saturday, June 2, 2018 at three ice arenas (Arctic Ice Arena in Orland Park, MB Ice Arena in Chicago, and the Mount Prospect Ice Arena), over 30 alumni high school teams and 450 players will participate in the Illinois Alumni Hockey Tournament fundraiser. The proceeds will benefit a local organization: the Westside Foundation.

This year’s tournament marks the first time alumni Blackhawk players will participate, including the MVP of the 2016 NHL All-Star game, John Scott. Additionally, Blackhawks alumni Daniel Carcillo, Ben Eager, Alex Broadhurst and Terry Broadhurst have committed to participate in the event.

This will be the Sixth Annual Illinois Alumni Hockey Tournament organized by alumni hockey players Mark Cassidy (2006 Lincoln-Way Central graduate), Kelly Bridgeman (1973 Homewood-Flossmoor graduate), Jim Ramsay (2007 Lincoln-Way Central graduate), Lucas McDonnell (2013 Lincoln-Way Central graduate), Chris Cimoch (2009 St. Rita graduate) and Jeff Leichenger (1997 Evanston graduate). Cassidy founded the event in 2013. He coordinates and participates in the fundraiser annually. "I am excited to get the guys back together for a weekend of hockey. It is a good way to keep in touch and support a great cause." he says.

Over 30 alumni hockey teams from throughout the state will participate. Each participating high school alumni team is tasked with fundraising to support the cause. The team that raises the most money will be selected to face-off against the Chicago Blackhawks alumni team on the night of Saturday, June 2 at the Blackhawks' new MB Ice Arena, in Chicago, Illinois. All participating teams will earn VIP perks for the tournament weekend through fundraising.

”Having Blackhawks players involved in this year's tournament is incredible. We hope that they have such a good time that they'll come back next year and invite even more Hawks," says Cassidy.

Fundraising will support the Westside Foundation, which was started as a way to provide assistance to Illinois families in hardship who have a child with a disability. The hockey tournament supports the Westside Foundation's 2018 goal to give away $50,000 to families in need. Alumni from Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way East and Lincoln-Way West will participate in the event.

Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 Board Secretary and former tournament committee member Aaron Janik first participated in the event in 2013, and plans to attend again this year. He says, “This event is family friendly and raises money for a great cause. The Lincoln-Way community should be proud of Mark and the other LW210 alumni involved for giving back to the community. The addition of the Chicago Blackhawks alumni should make this year’s tournament bigger and better than the last!”
