Lincoln-Way Central hosts Active April
Monday, April 23, 2018

From April 16 through April 20, 2018, Lincoln-Way Central Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) Department hosted their first “Active April” focus week. The PPS Department partnered with various student leaders and staff members to promote healthy activity both physically and mentally.

Each day hosted a different topic for students to explore. A table in the lunchroom lobby contained informational items encouraging different activities, and several after-school events were hosted for the Knights as well.

"The vision for Active April week is to educate students of the importance of physical activity in their daily lives,” says School Counselor Danielle Custardo. “Throughout the week, we highlighted a variety of simple and fun activities to get our students moving! When physical activity is something they enjoy, students are more likely to participate and stick with it."

Monday’s theme of “Get Moving” had students dancing along to music as they mimicked a video projected in the lunchroom. Groups of students participated together, laughing and dancing among their peers and teachers. Tuesday’s theme told students to “Find Your Balance” by offering yoga after classes with Ms. Lidy. “Make it Fun” was the theme for Wednesday, featuring games like bags, spike ball, Wii Sports, Kan Jam and Hula Hoops. Thursday theme, “What’s Your Strength?”, encouraged students to find their strong point with Ms. Sulkowski’s Barre class after school. Friday was a day to recuperate from their activities with the theme of “Rest and Relax.” The game series “Just Dance” was brought back by popular demand during the lunch periods. At the end of the week, all students who participated in the after school activities were entered into a raffle for gift cards.

“We’ve seen quite a bit of success with the theme weeks at Lincoln-Way Central,” says PPS Director Michele Newswander. “Our staff and volunteers from a variety of student activities have done a great job of making activities relevant and engaging for the students, and our Knights love participating with their friends. We look forward to continuing these focus weeks next year as well.”
