On Tuesday, April 17, 2018, New Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann joined teacher Alissa VanderSchaaf’s sophomore English classes as a real-world application for their persuasive writing skills.

The week prior, Warriors were tasked with writing letters to the mayor in order to make suggestions for New Lenox. Students used the business letter format and persuasive skills to explain why their ideas and suggestions should be realized.

"Having Mayor Baldermann speak to my classes was a great way for my students to apply what they learned in class to the real world,” says VanderSchaaf. “They had to not only use their persuasive skills, but also follow a professional format to make a suggestion that would improve New Lenox," she says.

While in class, Mayor Baldermann addressed student suggestions or concerns and discussed the factors that he considers while reading the correspondences of his residents. The mayor specifically explained how writing skills such as grammar and tone are important when it comes to making an argument.

Student Courtney Kurtz says, "It was really great to hear the mayor's thoughts on different topics and that he says he makes the decision that he believes is best for our community.”
