The Lincoln-Way North Jazz Ensemble enjoyed an exciting day participating in the 25th annual Purdue Jazz Festival in West Lafayette, Indiana this past Saturday, January 17.

The L-W North Jazz Ensemble took 3rd place overall in their competition. The group received straight Division 1 ratings from all 3 judges. Norths Jazz Ensemble performed Blue Cellophane by Duke Ellington (featuring LWN junior Jack Kotze), Chelsea Bridge by Billy Strayhorn and Rock in Rhythm by Duke Ellington.

Students got to take part in master and performance classes from the Purdue Jazz Band, Carl Allen (one of Kirk Hickmans former drum set teachers), Chris Potter, Dave Douglass and Bill Sears.

North Director of Bands Kirk Hickman said about his students, Im so proud of how the kids performed on Saturday. They represented LWN Jazz and the music department very well.

Hickman continued, As teachers, we strive to educate our kids about the history and performance of jazz through listening to recordings, watching videos and live performances the centerpiece of our jazz curriculum. All of that came through strong in their performance on Saturday. On top of their performance, we had a lot of fun together; its wonderful to spend a Saturday around such great kids who are also your students, and great musicians.
