Lincoln-Way East Scholastic Bowl Teams excel in competitionsThursday, March 8, 2018
On February 21, 2018 the Lincoln-Way East Scholastic Bowl Team closed out its SWSC campaign in the Conference Tournament. Varsity finished the regular season with a 10-2 record, taking third place in the 13-team conference. The spotlight was on the Freshman-Sophomore (Frosh-Soph) Team, whose record of 11-1 on the regular season earned them first place in the Blue Division. In the conference tournament, the Frosh-Soph team took second place, knocking off Stagg and Sandburg, but lost by one question to Homewood-Flossmoor. The Fresh-Soph team was led by students Abby McCreary and Matthew Ferracuti.
The Varsity squad also had a successful run, and closed out its season in the IHSA Regional Tournament on March 5, 2018. The team opened with a 610-90 victory over Rich South in a match where 11 different players scored points. In the Regional Semifinals, the Griffins faced off against Lincoln-Way Central. In a back-and-forth match that saw three lead changes, it came down to the 24th and final question set of the round, won by East for a 400-390 win.
In the Regional Finals, the Griffins fought a spirited match against Providence Catholic. The match came down to the final question set, with the Griffins losing 390-450. Patrick O'Halloran, Ryan Burns and Matthew Ferracuti led the team in scoring in the tournament.
Senior Ryan Burns says, “This season was one of building, and because of a good work ethic in and out of practice, we were prepared for any competition, and we won,” he says. “We were very successful.”
The Varsity team finished with one of its most successful seasons in recent years. East finishes its season with a record of 24-9.
“I am very proud of what these teams did this year, at all levels of the program. The kids were enthusiastic, encouraging, excited about competition, even on those long Saturday tournaments. I'm especially proud of the seniors who really set the tone. This class really wanted to leave a legacy of having built a winning culture, and they have. We had a lot of fun this year.” says Scholastic Bowl Coach, Matt Jordan.
Senior Wes Janicki knows this will only be the beginning of Griffin Scholastic Bowl success. He says, “This season has been one of the most memorable and rewarding. From the very beginning with “cacao” (a malapropism for cocoa), to some of the literally buzzer beater matches, every moment has felt incredible, yet humbling. And it doesn’t end here. This season was just the start.”
Among the high achieving students are:
• Senior Wesley Janicki and Junior Patrick O’Halloran, who made the SWSC All-Conference Team.
• Senior Ryan Burns and Sophomore Matthew Ferracuti, who made the Illinois High School Scholastic Bowl Coaches’ Association All-Sectional Team.
Junior Ellie Houlihan says, “It is so rare to find a group of friends that challenges you intellectually while also making you laugh uncontrollably. My Scholastic Bowl teammates somehow find a way to both inspire me and make me smile every time we practice or compete. We have had a thrilling season so far, and I am extremely grateful to have been a part of such an amazing team this year!”
