Lincoln-Way AFJROTC Varsity Drill Team takes first in SWSC Drill ChampionshipTuesday, February 27, 2018
On Saturday, February 17, 2018, four schools competed in the South-West Suburban Conference (SWSC) Drill Championship. The event lasted four hours was hosted in the field house of Lincoln-Way Central High School. The Lincoln-Way Central/West Air Force Junior ROTC Varsity Drill Team took first place in the Championship, with many individual teams earning high honors.
In their best performance of the year, the Armed Color Guard team, commanded by Jory Bell along with Adam Grande, Anika Svancarek, and Madison Kosel took first place. The Armed Duet by Anthony Grande and Patrick Murphy III finished as Conference Champions.
Second place finishers include: Unarmed Color Guard commanded by Zoe Dauer; Unarmed Inspection commanded by Abigail Sutter; and Unarmed Duet by Jade Espinoza and Magan Martinez.
In Armed Kock-Out division, Dustin Haven won the bronze medal, Danny Lewis won silver and Robert Osdieck won the gold. In Unarmed Knock-Out, Patrick Murphy III won the silver medal and Abigail Knippel took home bronze.
“There have been a lot of 'mountain top’ moments along with a lot of 'valleys' throughout the season,” says Master Sergeant Dan Schliffka. "It's exciting to see the cadets push through and finish so strongly to exceed expectations. We are all looking forward to be heading to Nationals as Conference Champions."
The cadets will head to the 2018 Air Force JROTC Open Drill Nationals competition on Saturday, March 24. They will compete at Wright State University Nutter Center from 7:00 a.m. until 6:30 p.m along with 24 other JROTC drill teams from across the country.
