Friday, September 29, 2017

On Monday, September 25, Lincoln-Way West began the celebration of their Homecoming Week with the annual tradition of Homecoming Olympics. It was LWW’s largest Homecoming Olympics in school history with over 1,000 students in attendance. There were 98 teams of 10 – 12 team members, and over 100 staff members volunteering for the numerous events on the Lincoln-Way West football field.

Parents, family members, teachers, and community members watched from the bleachers while taking photos and cheering for the participants. Teams were outfitted in matching uniforms to distinguish themselves and promote comradery.

“Homecoming Olympics is one of the best nights of the year. It is a highlight that many of our students, staff and community look forward to. The event would not be possible without all of the support from our staff members,” said Activities Coordinator, Heather Novak.

“While we know the event is a fun night for our students, we also encourage our students to use this time to give back. We will be donating $2,000 to research for Juvenille Sandhoff Disease, and have collected over 400 items to be donated the New Lenox Food Pantry. We are proud of our students, staff, and community who made our Homecoming Olympics a success on and off the playing field.”

Students participated in classic events such as relay races, tug-o-war, and musical chairs. Some unique and exciting obstacles were also involved including a Hula Hoop Relay contest and a Beach Day Relay, where students raced to dress in sunglasses, hats, and other poolside necessities.

The winner of the Homecoming Olympics will be announced Friday during West’s pep assembly. The team totals come from the field events and the canned food drive this year.

The theme of the Warrior’s Homecoming this year is “Welcome to Paradise.” The first 100 Warriors wearing their Hawaiian wear were given leis on Tropical Tuesday of Homecoming week. The dance will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2017.
