Lincoln-Way West teacher receives doctorate while juggling a family and career

On Saturday, December 17, 2016, Lincoln-Way West teacher Amanda Matty walked across the stage to receive her doctorate. Matty began the program of study three and a half years ago, when her younger child was only six months old. “I wanted to get my doctorate before the kids were active in sports so that I wouldn’t miss anything,” she says.

Lincoln-Way West students named Illinois State Scholars

On Thursday, January 12, 2017 in the Warriors Lodge at Lincoln-Way West, 73 students gathered to celebrate their Illinois State Scholar status. The requirements for consideration to become an Illinois State Scholar are ACT and/or SAT test scores, unweighted GPA, and class size. According to the Illinois Student Assistance Commission, “In any academic year, approximately 10% of all Illinois high school graduates are named State Scholars.”

Early Bird Registration opens for Lincoln-Way Half Marathon

The Lincoln-Way Half Marathon, formerly known as the Frankfort Half Marathon, will take place on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 7:00 a.m. The race will begin and end at Breidert Green Park in downtown Frankfort and participants will run along Old Plank Road Trail throughout the race.

District 210 Educators Attend Inauguration

On Wednesday, January 11, 2017 three Lincoln-Way High School educators traveled to Springfield to attend an inauguration event for State Senator Michael E. Hastings. Hastings was reelected for a second term to serve 19th District, which encompasses District 210 and much of the neighboring south suburbs. Lincoln-Way East social science teachers Kevin McCleish and Patrick Leonard, joined by Lincoln-Way Central’s Sarah Brady, received an invitation to attend the event at the Illinois State Library.

Lincoln-Way Central awarded Schoolyard Habitat Action Grant

Lincoln-Way Central has been awarded nearly $1,000 in grant money from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) in order to enhance their science curriculum. Teacher Scott McCreary began the process of obtaining the Illinois Schoolyard Habitat Action Grant in the fall semester. By Thanksgiving, the application was complete.

Lincoln-Way West Pep Band selected to perform at IHSA State FInals

The Lincoln-Way West High School Pep Band, under the direction of Cary Ruklic, has been selected as one of the Official 2017 Illinois High School Association (IHSA) State Final Pep Bands. The band completed an application to perform in mid-December of 2016, submitting audio and video audition material. Ruklic was notified of the selection on Friday, January 13. Approximately 70 Warrior band members will perform at Redbird Arena at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois on March 4, 2017.

Lincoln-Way Board of Education approves Strategic Plan

On Thursday, January 19, 2017 at the Lincoln-Way District 210 Board of Education meeting, board members voted to approve the five year long-range strategic plan. The creation of the plan was facilitated by Dr. Robert J. Madonia in early December, who volunteered his services at no cost to the district. Madonia, alongside the administration and Board of Education, engaged volunteer community leaders and residents to provide input and guidance on how the district should move forward over the next five years. Recommendations from the special 107-person Strategic Long Range Planning Committee were officially approved in six key focus areas.

Lincoln-Way East Athletic Boosters to host Chili Cook-Off Competition

On March, 4, 2017, the Lincoln-Way Athletic Boosters will host a Chili Cook-Off in the cafeteria of Lincoln-Way East High School. The first prize winner will receive $100.00, the second prize winner will receive $50.00, and the third prize winner will receive $25.00. Only thirty contestants will be permitted to compete, so those interested should register early. Those who register before February 8 will be reimbursed upon arrival to the event. Those who register between February 9 and February 18 will pay a $20.00 registration fee. Those who register after February 18 will be charged $25.00. Registration will close February 28.

On Wednesday, February 8, 2017, the Lincoln-Way East Science Department will host their "Griffins Growing STEM" night for feeder schools. Children in kindergarten through 6th grade from Frankfort School District 157-C and Summit Hill School District 161 are invited to participate; the event will be held from 4:45 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Parents should bring their children to the Lincoln-Way East cafeteria to meet, and are required to stay in the building as their child participates in the activities.

Lincoln-Way East student conducts research at school, helps other students

Student Adam Pleasant has had an avid interest in science since five years old. Currently enrolled in medical anatomy, physiology, and AP physics courses at Lincoln-Way East, Pleasant has been able to arrange his course schedule to match his interests. Additionally, he joined Science Club during his junior year where he was encouraged to conduct scientific research in order to submit a project to the Regeneron Science Talent Search.

Lincoln-Way students win 24 awards in 2017 Scholastic Art Competition

During the third week in January of 2017, students in District 210 competed in the 2017 Scholastic Art Competition. The Scholastic Art Show is the most recognized and prestigious high school art exhibition in the nation. In the Midwest region, area schools submitted 2,619 works of art with only 838 pieces awarded and accepted into the show.
